5 Tips for the Picture-Perfect Gallery Wall Design

Do you have an empty wall in your home that you’re unsure what to do with? An art gallery wall might be just the thing you need to make it come alive and creatively transform the space.

My favorite thing about creating a gallery wall is how it adds personality to your home. Creating a gallery wall design allows you to display what you love but can’t find the space to feature on a shelf or side table. Think of your favorite artwork, pictures of the kids, or any other photos from special moments in your life – are they tucked away in a photo album or box? Now is the time to put them on display for all to see!

Gallery walls are a beautiful way to celebrate all your milestones and memories, and I can’t wait to show you how to make your own beautiful display! The best part is you don’t need any fancy equipment or tools to make it happen. With just a few tips and tricks, and a few gallery style picture frames, you can DIY a breathtaking wall design that you’ll never want to stop looking at.

 Wall Design 101

If you’ve ever scrolled through Pinterest, I’m sure you’ve seen your fair share of wall designs or art gallery walls. And while I’m sure they were beautiful, I want to remind you that the key to making a wall design is all about making it your own!

Wall designs should reflect your unique personality – this means just about anything goes when it comes to your design. While gallery style picture frames typically take up this space, you can add your own touch by playing with different accent walls (make sure to use an aesthetic color palette), textured designs, or even hanging objects rather than photos.

Above all else, you should prioritize having fun and choosing prints, pictures, colors, or designs your heart absolutely adores. Otherwise, you’re missing out on the real benefit of an art gallery wall. These walls uplift the style of your home, provide a focal point for any room, and can be a source of inspiration and happiness for your well-being. A place to always bring you joy, the way mine does for me

Ready to start brainstorming your own stunning art gallery wall? You won’t regret it! And to keep it fun and easy for you, I’ve put together my top 5 tips on making the most of your wall and creating a layout that complements every piece for the best visual impact. Keep reading for inspiration and strategies to bring your vision to life!

1. Mix Landscape and Portrait Style Artwork

If you’ve picked your favorite art prints or personal photos to put up on your wall (this in itself is an accomplishment!), you’ll want to make sure that you mix up the picture orientation.

By using landscape and portrait style art or photography, you can create a multi-dimensional look that provides a calming feel to those who see it. This is especially important if you opt for doing an art ledge rather than an entire wall.

Pro tip: Swap out your photos whenever you want! Whether it’s a special event, holiday, or change of season, changing the pictures in your gallery wall can help you showcase even more photos that have been hiding in storage (or you can take the opportunity to display something more recent).

2. Incorporate Different Frames and Finishes

I’d encourage you to use the same frames if you’re going for a more traditional or classical look. However, if you want something a bit more colorful and eclectic, you can mix different frames and finishes (i.e., different sizes, shapes, or colors of frames) to create a free and fun feel. This is a great way to create visual interest and make your gallery wall even more eye-catching.

3. Use a Grid Pattern

The grid pattern design is one of the easiest and most streamlined looks, especially if you’re looking for a classy touch. This gallery wall layout typically consists of 6, 9, or 12 pieces of artwork with the same size, frame, and picture orientation. This creates an upscale, minimalist look that and is a great fit if you want to keep things simple.

4. Get Creative

One of the best ways to keep this project fun is by really getting creative with how you position the items you have on your wall.

There are so many exciting and interesting ways to stack art. For example, you could choose two pieces that aren’t the same size, shape, or style frame and hang one above the other. This gives your wall an art collection feel like you’ve traveled far and wide to bring these pieces together!

5. Create a Cohesive Color Palette

Color is key to your gallery wall. Whether you’re going for a colorful, bohemian vibe or a neutral color palette, be sure your gallery wall matches the aesthetic of your space. You don’t want your wall to stick out like a sore thumb!

To do so, use an aesthetic color palette that complements the room it’s in, then choose artwork that also goes well with the color palette. Keep the hues and tones in the same family, and your wall will look absolutely perfect in your space!

Make It Your Own!

A wall design is such a beautiful way to celebrate the family and the life you’re building within your home. While Pinterest inspiration can help you get started, remember that this is your home, and all that matters is that your gallery wall brings YOU joy whenever you walk past it.

Use mixed landscape and portrait art. Try different frames and finishes. Stay traditional with a grid, or get creative with your layouts. Whatever look you’re going for, be inspired to make it your own!
