DIY Wood Wall Treatments

What do Joanna Gaines, Shea McGee, and Amber Interiors have in common? Besides being incredibly talented interior designers, they each have a signature style that you can recognize instantly. Developing your own design voice takes time, but one of my favorite ways to add personality to a room is with wood wall treatments. If you’ve ever wanted to bring visual interest to blank walls or give your bedroom a more finished feel, these ideas are a great place to start.

Wood paneling is a great way to give any bedroom design a custom and high-end look, even if you’re working with a small space or a basic layout. Whether you’re upgrading your primary bedroom, updating a guest room, or looking for ideas that help a small bedroom feel more layered, these DIY projects are beginner-friendly and make a big difference.

If you’re just getting started with DIY, try one wall or a small corner. These wood treatments are perfect for creating an accent wall, defining a cozy reading nook, or highlighting the focal point of the room, like your bed frame or a DIY headboard. They bring in texture, warmth, and a feeling of intention that can turn a plain room into one of your favorite rooms in the house.

This is one of the easiest ways to add character to bedroom walls. Thin trim pieces arranged into rectangles or squares bring instant structure to a room. Keep it tone-on-tone for a soft, layered look or go bold with contrast for more impact.

For a more formal look, this style adds depth and detail using two layers of molding. It works especially well in a primary bedroom where you want something classic and rich. I have a detailed guide with a layout calculator and tools list available for purchase. Check it out here.

Beadboard Paneling

Beadboard is perfect for small rooms and brings in a cozy, cottage-inspired feel. Use it on the lower half of the wall and pair it with paint or wallpaper up top for a nice mix of texture and color.

Chair Rail Molding

A classic horizontal trim that divides the wall and adds subtle detail. It’s also a great way to introduce two tones or a mix of paint and wallpaper without feeling busy.

Vertical Shiplap

This treatment has a clean and modern look. It works beautifully in rooms with natural light and wood furniture and adds just enough texture to keep things interesting.

Tongue and Groove Paneling

Similar to shiplap, tongue and groove boards lock together for a seamless wall finish. It’s a great fit for traditional or transitional bedroom styles.

Geometric Accent Walls

If you like more modern aesthetics, a geometric design made with wood trim or slats is a great idea. It brings a bold and custom feel to even the smallest space.

These panels add soft vertical texture and can be painted to blend in or stand out. They work really well behind a bed or dresser and pair nicely with other natural materials.

Box Molding or Wainscoting

Great for traditional bedrooms or those with a little extra ceiling height. This classic trim style adds detail without overwhelming the space.

Wallpaper Inside Picture Frame Molding

An easy way to add color or pattern in a more controlled way. Frame a section of wallpaper inside trim for a layered and custom look. If you use peel-and-stick, you can always swap it out later.

Mix and Match Paneling

Don’t be afraid to mix styles. I combined box molding and beadboard in one guest room and painted everything the same color. It turned out to be one of my favorite wall treatments and made the entire room feel custom.

DIY wall paneling is one of the best ways to add personal touches to your home. It brings in texture, structure, and a sense of design without taking up floor space, which makes it a great option for small bedrooms. Whether you’re into modern designs or something more traditional, wood wall treatments are a great way to make your bedroom feel more like you.

Add a Large Rug to Ground the Room

One of the easiest ways to make a bedroom feel more pulled together is by adding a large area rug. Even if you already have carpet, layering a rug on top adds texture, warmth, and a sense of intention. Rugs help define the layout of your bedroom and make the space feel more finished, especially in rooms where the furniture layout feels a little off.

In a small space, a large rug can actually help the room feel bigger by creating a visual foundation for all the furniture. In a larger room, it helps anchor the bed and creates zones, like a cozy reading nook or a soft landing spot at the foot of the bed.

The key is to go big. A common mistake is using a rug that’s too small. Make sure your rug extends at least halfway under your bed and ideally reaches your bedside tables too. This keeps everything visually connected and avoids the look of a tiny floating rug.

Choose a rug that complements your bedroom décor and brings in color, pattern, or softness, depending on what the room needs. I love using vintage-style rugs in earthy tones for a layered and lived-in feel or neutral modern designs to keep it calm and minimal.

A rug can tie together all the design elements in the room and give it that finished look without doing any major renovations. It’s a great idea for renters, too, since it’s totally removable and easy to switch out with the seasons.

Install a Wood Plank Ceiling

If your bedroom is feeling flat or a little too builder-grade, adding a wood plank ceiling is a great way to bring in warmth and charm using natural materials. Ceilings are usually the most overlooked part of a room, but they can become one of the most impactful design elements when you give them some love.

We added wood planks to the ceiling in our primary bedroom, and it instantly made the space feel cozier and more custom. It draws your eye upward, which is especially helpful in a small space where you want to create the feeling of height and openness. If you have a tray ceiling or vaulted ceiling, this is a great idea to emphasize the architecture and make it a true focal point of the room.

You can use real tongue-and-groove wood, pine planks, or even faux wood panels, depending on your budget and tools. Stain them to match your bedroom furniture or paint them in a soft white or warm beige for a subtle look. The goal is to add texture overhead without overwhelming the space.

This project is perfect if your bedroom design is missing something, but you can’t quite figure out what. A wood ceiling brings in character and balance, especially when paired with soft bedding, natural wood frames, and simple window treatments. It gives the room a cozy, finished feel and adds just enough contrast to elevate your modern bedroom style without going too bold.

Use a Gallery Wall to Fill Tall Bedroom Walls

If your bedroom has high ceilings and you’re not sure how to style the walls, a gallery wall is a great way to bring everything back down to eye level and make the room feel more balanced. Tall walls can sometimes make a room feel a little empty or cold, but artwork instantly adds warmth and visual interest.

The key is to go vertical with your layout. Stack framed prints, art, or photographs in a way that draws the eye up and fills that blank space in a thoughtful way. You can mix frame sizes or stick to a symmetrical grid depending on your personal style. I love including a mix of vintage finds, landscape paintings, and family photos for a layered look that feels personal.

In a modern bedroom, a black and white gallery wall with clean lines can feel sleek and curated. In more traditional spaces, you can mix ornate frames with muted colors to soften the height of the room and add a cozy, collected feel.

This is one of my favorite bedroom décor tricks for rooms with tall ceilings because it makes such a big difference without needing to add new furniture or change your layout. Plus, it’s a great way to fill bare walls and bring in personal touches that reflect your style and story.

Bedroom upgrade ideas don’t have to involve a full renovation or brand new furniture. Small changes like adding a wood wall treatment, layering a large rug, or creating a gallery wall can breathe new life into your space. Use these ideas to create a bedroom that feels like a true personal sanctuary and reflects your own style. Whether you’re planning one big weekend project or slowly collecting inspiration, there’s always a good reason to invest in the place where you begin and end each day.
