Stress Free Budgeting for Home Renovations

The following post is sponsored by Discover Personal Loans, all opinions are my own. Discover is an Equal Housing Lender.

Okay so today’s post is something I’ve been meaning to talk about for a loooong time. Everyone enjoys a good makeover but not a lot of people talk about what goes on behind the scenes, the planning, the budgeting and then finally the execution.

It sounds exciting to just jump into a project on impulse (not gonna lie, I’ve done that before ?), but it’s soo much wiser to take a step back and do the planning before you start anything. So today I’m going to share how you can plan for projects and how budgeting for home renovations with a Discover personal loan may make sense for some people.

Home renovation planning

planning out a visual in the form of a mood boards always helps

Before I start designing a room for my own house, I always start with a Pinterest board of images that inspire me or design elements that I want to incorporate. Then, before putting pen to paper I take ALL of my measurements. The walls, the windows, the doors, everything, and sketch it onto a sheet of paper. I also take tons of pictures of the room.

Budgeting for projects

Once you’ve narrowed the design and material you’ll need (think lumber, lighting, furniture), do some preliminary research and assign a rough dollar estimate to each category.

I like to make a spreadsheet with all categories and calculate an initial budget estimate. Just as an example, for a small room like my current guest bedroom makeover, I set a hard limit on budget at $3k. This includes contractor payments, material and accessories. Because furniture for the room is being sponsored by various brands, I did not budget for it, but it should be something that you account for in your spreadsheet.

The next big project I have in mind is my main bathroom renovation and that will be a much more expensive project, something I might not want to pay for out of pocket, all at once. A typical full bathroom remodel (without higher end finishes) can cost from anywhere between $5-30k.

To help you get a better understanding of how much your next home renovation might cost, there are several online calculators that can give you a better sense of what you might need to spend on your own bathroom and kitchen renovations.

It sounds like a big investment, and it is, but Discover Personal Loans offers a great loan solution to help make big home renovation projects a reality.

Discover Personal Loan

A convenient way to finance your home reno projects may be to use a personal loan from Discover. Even if your project is small, you can still customize your personal loan for any amount between $2,500 and $35,000, and choose from a range of repayment terms. Flexibility like this can fit a variety of budgets.

One of the best things about a Discover personal loan is that most people get a decision the same day. We often need to make same-day financial decisions with a renovation, and the Discover loan process may help you do that more comfortably. And, your money can be sent as soon as the next business day once you’re approved and accept the loan.

With a personal loan, you can borrow money without using your home as collateral, which makes the renovation less stressful! Another benefit of using Discover Personal Loans is that there are no origination fees, which is a charge that some lenders require their borrowers to pay to get the loan. Shaving this off allows you to put more money toward your project!

A lot of us purchase homes that need work but never get those big projects going because of all the money that’s involved. I highly recommend looking into Discover Personal Loans to get those jobs started and finished so you can enjoy the space you live in.

I cannot wait to keep you updated on my current and future projects, big and small. So stay tuned to Instagram and I’ll take you through my home reno journey!
