Stunning Vent Hood Design Ideas for your Kitchen Makeover

A beautiful custom range hood can completely transform the look of a kitchen, and these vent hood design ideas will help you do just that.

In this post, I will share some of my favorite vent hood or range hood ideas for the new focal point of the kitchen. If you’re planning on updating your kitchen design, I’ve got some great ideas for you to make the whole process easier.

Modern European Style Kitchen Reveal 5

I have a builder-grade kitchen in my house, which came with a basic kitchen range hood and faux cabinets above it. I wanted to do a low-budget kitchen makeover without changing the entire layout of the kitchen space. I wanted to give the new kitchen a European farmhouse kitchen aesthetic without making any major changes to the kitchen’s design.

Stainless steel range hoods don’t exactly fit that aesthetic, so that was definitely not staying. While they might be an excellent choice for a contemporary kitchen to give a sleek look, it wasn’t right for me.

For my kitchen remodel, I looked through a ton of custom range hood designs because I was working with limited space. My under-cabinet range hood has cabinets on either side, which meant the new range hood would have to be a perfect fit in the space.

Before I show you the range hood style I picked for my kitchen, let’s go through some vent hood design ideas together.

Swooping Curves – Eye Swoon Athena Calderone

The beautiful kitchen in Athena Calderone’s Brooklyn home has been an inspiration for me for a long time. The curved range hood option here is great for people who like a transitional design look.

It’s the perfect balance between traditional and modern design, and interior designers like Calderone have made this a popular look. The white plaster on top of the designer range hood gives it a truly high-end finish.

Simple Reclaimed Wood – Heidi Caillier Designs

Moving on to a more traditional design with a beautiful vintage tile backsplash, this wood range hood’s look is one of my favorites. Heidi Caillier nails the cottage core aesthetic, and even the art placement on the vent hood cover is unique.

The simple design is accented by natural materials like the reclaimed wood trim. The range hood cover looks like an extension of the wall and is painted the same color as the wall to give it a harmonious look.

Corbel it up – Erin Zubot Designs

Erin Zubot is one of my designer/DIYer friends from Instagram, and she comes up with the most beautiful looks in the design world. She made everything in this kitchen herself! Including this gorgeous decorative range hood construction.

I love the corbels she has used to add a little fun detail. If you want to steal the design, she has the entire process up for grabs on her blog! Paired with simple shaker cabinets, her entire space looks incredible.

Modern Mediterranean Stucco – Jenna Sue Designs

Let’s chat about stucco and plaster finish wood hoods. These European-inspired designs all start off with custom wood frames. You can add as many curves and swoops as you like to mimic traditional range hoods. Custom cabinetry is the way to go if you want a more ornate finish.

Jenna Sue, as always, breaks it down into a digestible DIY guide with custom installation instructions. I love how easy she makes it look! For the ventilation unit, she used a ZLINE wall mount unit.

European Inspired Custom Kitchen Hoods

If you want to see more inspiration for European farmhouse kitchen styles and vent hood ideas, here is a great resource for you to check out. I wrote this blog post last year when renovating a client’s kitchen.

We looked at a ton of different options, and I offered a variety of shapes to choose from for the vent hood. You will find all that inspiration here and more design ideas for that aesthetic.

Built in Shelves

And here is the client’s kitchen makeover I was just talking about! This beautiful kitchen range hood is finished in Roman Clay, which gives a lovely soft finish. The homeowners decided to reuse the old ventilation hood and just build around it. The total height of the range hood extends to the ceiling, giving it a majestic look.

Personally, my favorite detail is the built-in niches for storing oil and vinegar. They’re the perfect little spot for creating a design moment. The organic finish of the range contrasts beautifully with the dark marble countertops.

Size Matters – Chris Loves Julia

Another classic design by Jean Stoffer is this massive arched range hood in Chris Loves Julia’s kitchen. The sheer size of it makes it the focal point of the kitchen. If you look closely, there is a flat edge where the corners of the range hood meet, and I am obsessed with that chamfered edge detail! The finish is an Italian plaster that was tinted to Sherwin-Williams Downy.

You can see little arched alcoves on either side of the range hood walls, which are the perfect touch.

Vertical Paneling Custom Hood – Kin and Kasa

I am so proud of my friend Ryia, from Kin and Kasa, who designed her kitchen and knocked it out of the park! This incredible transformation has completely changed the look of her entire space.

Vertical paneling behind a range is becoming a popular choice. She accented the paneling with a beautiful soapstone ledge with a brass railing. This is a great example of a painted vent hood, and I urge you to check out the rest of her kitchen makeover as well!

I wanted to include a more modern design option as well, just for people who aren’t sold on the European-inspired aesthetic.

Here is a gorgeous range hood, wrapped in light wood. It’s paired with a bold marble countertop to offset the plain vent cover. The white cabinets and brass pendants really tie in the whole look.

Tapered Lines – Era Design House

And finally, this is the exact vent hood cover that was the design inspiration for my kitchen. I was limited to design styles that would work with the in-between cabinet range hoods.

This is an excellent example of how you can make a statement with a vent hoo,d even if you don’t have a ton of space to play with. You don’t have to have a massive 60″ range to make an impact with the design. This 30″ range hood is a classic design with an angled cover.

Clean Lines for a Modern Kitchen

Hoodsly - Angled Hood Without Trim

You guys, I’m so excited to share the vent hood design I went with for my kitchen! I chose this angled vent hood without any trim from Hoodsly. Initially, I had planned on making my own DIY vent hood, but with family coming to stay with me this summer, the timeline was very tight.

I ended up finding the perfect custom range hood cover with the added bonus of getting my ventilation unit at the same website. Hoodsly offers a ton of designs to choose from, and your job is to provide measurements and choose from their customization options. I added an additional 6″ to their standard unit so my vent hood would reach the ceiling.

The order took a few weeks in production and included installation instructions when it arrived. It was way too heavy for Hassaan and I to lift up on our own (he has a bad back) and we hired a handyman to help install it.

I’m not gonna lie, it was a struggle to get it to fit just right, but it looks stunning! I still have to finish up the crown detail on top of the vent hood, so it’s not ready for a final reveal just yet. I got it in the primed version, and you can choose from multiple finishes on their website.

My plan is to limewash it in Avorio White by Romabio, which is the same finish we chose for our living room fireplace. I cannot wait to share the finished result with you all!

Easy Vent Hood Upgrade Ideas Without Replacing It

Okay, friends, let’s talk about giving your existing vent hood a fresh look without replacing the whole thing. I know a lot of you message me asking if there’s an easy way to update a basic kitchen hood without tearing it out, and the answer is yes.

Whether you’re working with a stainless steel range hood, one of those under-cabinet range hoods, or even just a super simple insert, it doesn’t take a full renovation to elevate it.

One of the easiest upgrades is adding wood trim or a small build-out to your existing vent hood. If you’ve got basic carpentry tools and some scrap wood, you can totally wrap your hood with a clean, wood frame and make it look like a custom range hood.

I’ve seen this done with natural materials like red oak or pine, and it gives a beautiful layered look, especially if your kitchen already has warm wood tones or open shelving. I’m actually considering doing this above our kitchen island to tie it in with our perimeter cabinets and give it that cottagecore feel.

Another option I love is painting your current vent hood. If you’re working with a stainless steel hood and want it to blend more into your kitchen cabinets or stand out as a statement piece, painting it is the easiest way to go. Just make sure to use high-heat paint!

I’ve seen people go with soft earthy tones, dusty pinks, and even moody navy colors that match their upper cabinets or tie into a color palette elsewhere in the room.

If you’re not up for paint or trim work, another great option is building a simple custom cover to slip over your insert. You can go boxy and modern, or add a curve for a more traditional kitchen look.

This is such a great way to bring in design elements that match your kitchen style. Think shaker cabinets, marble countertops, or even a little wood hood moment with a brass strap for that extra detail.

Honestly, your kitchen hood doesn’t have to be an afterthought. It can totally be a standout feature, even in a small space. These little updates are such an easy way to add charm, especially if you’re still in the middle of a longer kitchen design journey. Let me know if you try any of these ideas!

There are so many more kitchen range hood designs I haven’t even touched upon. From brass and copper range hoods to marble wrapped hoods, there’s so much variety out there. The right range hood design can really change the vibe of your kitchen.
