Living Room Refresh with Bassett Furniture

This year I had the opportunity to work with Bassett Furniture to makeover my living room as part of their Power of the American Home Campaign. We transformed our space into a cozy family retreat that we can enjoy for the years to come. I am so excited to finally share the whole process with you guys! If you’re new here, you should check out this mid century modern living room design from last year!

Power of the American Home Campaign

When the Bassett team reached out to me about the Power of the American Home campaign I, as a POC immigrant, felt especially proud to be representing an American household. I genuinely love supporting brands that are inclusive and work to break stereotypes. For me, the Power of the American Home is in celebrating diversity and embracing cultures that bind us together. It all ties into the rich history of Bassett Furniture going back to 1902, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. What started off as a small, family owned business is now a household name for USA made custom furniture at an affordable price point.

A Look into the Design Process

Now let’s dive into the design of our living room! I chose my family room for this makeover because this space is where we spend most of our day, whether it’s watching a movie with the family or laying down for a midday nap while my son plays around me. Our family room is the heart of our home and is truly where we all gather. The furniture we had in there felt small for the scale of the room and we needed more seating that still looked modern.

I visited my nearest Bassett showroom to get a feel for their products and pick out my pieces and let me tell you – I was so impressed by their selection and quality of product! My favorite part about the furniture selection process was that all upholstered items were completely customizable, from the fabric to pillows and seat filling options. I was able to create my own custom furniture with the help of their talented in-store designers! It was so helpful to be able to feel the fabrics in person and compare and contrast different textures before making a decision.

Mixing and matching styles and textures is one of my go-to design processes – I love the contrast and personality it lends to the room whenever you mix and match materials to create your own unique look. I love incorporating those textures from back home into all my designs. The best part was that I was able to find pieces at Bassett to replicate my vision.

I went with the Beckham sofa because of its clean lines and modern look, it is also much larger than our previous sofa. For our accent chairs I chose the Fiore chair because of its unique rattan structure and design – I love the mix of materials it lends to the room. The rattan reminds me of the cane furniture from back home!

When planning the layout of a room I try to make a focal point and design around it – in the case of our family room, the focal point is our fireplace wall that we DIY-ed recently. If it is a larger space it’s best to divide it in sections and work in smaller areas and anchor each area with a rug if needed.

To create more functional storage I added two accent tables – one, a set of nesting tables and a concrete finish accent table to play off the concrete finish of our fireplace hearth. To anchor the room and furniture, I chose the Aurora Rug in 10×13 to create the perfect canvas for our neutral living room. The rug’s neutral Persian inspired design is a subtle nod to the handcrafted textiles from South Asia.

One of my favorite accessories that I picked for our living room is the Dwight Adjustable Floor Lamp which is such a beautiful sculptural piece. The brass and black finish really pull together elements from the living room. Right above the Fiore Club Chair I hung modern framed art from Bassett in between the floor to ceiling windows to draw the eye to this cozy corner.
