I get asked this question a lot on Instagram – how do you keep your kitchen counters clutter free? And my answer is always: it’s not easy but it’s possible. So today I’m sharing my top tips on how to keep your kitchen looking minimalist and as clutter free as possible.
Before we get into it, I want you to know that it is a bit of a lifestyle change to have clutter free counters, if you’re used to having everything outside, from snacks to appliances, then it is a bit of a habit change that needs to happen before we get a clean slate. The good news is, you can totally get there by making small changes over a period of time to get that Pinterest kitchen!
- The first step you want to take is the remove everything from your countertop, even the sugar pot! Remove everything. Figure out what can go inside the pantry, what can go in a cabinet under the sink or inside a drawer. Unless your cooking utensils are an accent piece like wooden spoons and ladles (they make for lovely decor!) they should also go inside a drawer.
- If you have a dish rack that’s normally left outside, try transitioning to a drying mat which is easier to fold and put away once your dishes are washed. I try not to leave my washed dishes hanging around for too long.
- decant your dish soap and hand soap in a clear glass dispenser or get a pretty set from Home Goods that you can refill with your own soap once finished (always get clear soap to make it look cohesive!)
- If you have space in your pantry, you can put your appliances in there and pull them out when needed. I personally have my toaster oven, food processor, blender, and other small appliances tucked away in cabinets and the pantry.
- Use baskets to corral smaller items like your sugar pot, salt and pepper etc I try to keep jars and containers label free as much as possible to make everything gel together well.
- I make sure my kitchen towels are all the same color family and don’t have too much pattern to distract they eye. Lay a fresh towel next to your stove top and add a clean, simple spoon rest.
- Try not to clutter your refrigerator with magnets and notes – if you really need to add stuff, make sure it’s on the side where it’s not easily visible!
- Adopt a more minimalist lifestyle and donate whatever you think is excessive. If you don’t need two sets of dinnerware, donate one! Keep only what you truly need and use – everything else can be parted with or stored in the garage until you’re ready to give it up.
I hope these tips helped you out with keeping your kitchen counters tidy and free of clutter! I love decorating my kitchen with neutral accessories and good quality faux plants. A bowl of fresh fruit always brightens up the space and makes it feel more cozy and lived in. Tell me what you’re going to do differently in your kitchen!
