Ah, green, a reminder of the great outdoors and the primary color we all love. Lately I’ve been seeing so many green paint colors in use, from kitchen cabinets to living room walls, it’s definitely an interior designer favorite. The color green is so universally pleasing that it’s easy to make the plunge even if you love neutral paint colors. I went through the process myself recently for my office makeover and looked for shades of green to make a bold statement. I have a few favorites, earthy greens, shades of forest green, hunter green, even pale green that I wouldn’t hesitate to use in other parts of my house. My list of interior paints might not include popular choices like “green smoke”, “evergreen fog” or “studio green” but my list includes different shades that will give you a uniquely perfect green hue. No vibrant lime here though! So if you want a wall color to create a sophisticated backdrop in your own home, keep reading!

Dark Green Paint Color Choices

  1. Mount Etna by Sherwin Williams is a luscious deep green which is incredibly hard to capture in a picture. With blue undertones, it creates a lively accent in any home. Julia Marcum from Chris Loves Julia used it on an accent wall in her previous house and that was my first introduction to this rich green paint color.

2) Current Mood by Clare Paint is another one of my favorite green paint colors. I have it on one wall in my loft/playroom and it’s another one of those blue greens that are easy to love.

3) Essex Green is another dramatic green that I just could not resist putting on my list. Angela Rose has a perfect example of it in action in her guest room. The glamor of deep emerald is evident in this accent wall. For contemporary spaces this color green would add the perfect note.

Mid-tone Green Paint Colors

4) Thunderous is yet another favorite by Sherwin Williams and once again used by Chris Loves Julia in their kitchen remodel. Clearly I’m obsessed with that power couple! This muddy grey-green is high on my list and just has a very classy look to it. See for yourself in this gorgeous kitchen photo! I used it in my home office remodel and it was my first introduction to green walls. Here’s some expert advice for you – for best results, try this color in a sample pot first because it looks extremely different in changing light. In natural light it will give a softer look with gray undertones but in a darker office space like mine it has a moody look.

5) Shade Grown by Sherwin Williams is a deep foresty green with brown undertones. It is a great choice for a small space like the powder room shown below to add instant drama. This dark green color has been popular on social media and looks so good with brass accents.

Light Green Interior Paint Colors to Try

6) Carolina Gull by Benjamin Moore is a really pretty muted green which is instantly soothing to the eyes. One of my favorite sage green colors is October Mist by Benjamin moore color collections. It was their color of the year for 2022 and I used it in my guest bathroom. It’s very similar to this color, Carolina Gull which would be perfect for spa-inspired bathrooms.

7) French Gray by Farrow and Ball might not have the word green in the name but it is the perfect hint of color to add in your house color scheme. For someone who’s afraid to make a bold statement with a dark green color, this might be the right shade for you. It’s a light sage green color with gray undertones and I used it for my second office remodel. If lighter shades and airy colors are your thing, you have to check this one out. Ooh this would also look amazing in a formal dining room!

How to find the perfect green shade for you

It was incredibly hard narrowing it down to just seven paint colors from the most popular shades but I think this list sums up my favorite moody greens. One more thing to note is look through the historical collection of a paint company, those are a great place to start as well.

Going in store and looking at actual paint colors makes all the difference and you have a really wide range of options to choose from. Bring a few sample pots home, try painting swatches in different parts of the room before committing to a color and I promise you, you won’t regret the color green!

If you’ve already experimented some of these best green paint colors and are looking to explore other color families, check out this round up of my favorite blue colors! In fact, they both have the same complementary color  (orange red) so you could make your own unique color palette.
