The Best DIY Walk In Pantry Ideas for a Small Kitchen

If you’ve been following along, you know I’ve been deep in a pantry makeover rabbit hole—dreaming, planning, and making it all happen. My own tiny 4×4’ builder-grade pantry is getting a serious glow-up with antique doors, cafe curtains, and custom shelving. But let’s be real—small pantry spaces can be tricky! I’ve rounded up the best DIY walk-in pantry ideas for a small kitchen to give you all the inspiration you need. Whether you’re dealing with a cramped space, awkward corners, or just want a Pinterest-worthy pantry, these ideas will help you maximize function and style.

Stacked Bins and Containers

Let’s start with a simple but game-changing pantry organization tip: stacked bins. This keeps everything neat while maximizing vertical storage. Clear containers with white lids (hello, Korken IKEA jars!) are a great option for keeping pantry staples visible and easily accessible. Plus, it just looks pretty. Having uniform containers creates a visually appealing and cohesive look while also making it easier to grab what you need without sifting through a cluttered mess.

Narrow Shelves for Maximum Visibility

Deep shelves = lost quinoa from 2019. I’ve been there. Opting for narrow pantry shelves is a great idea because it prevents things from getting shoved to the back, making it easier to see and grab what you need. It also gives you more walking space if you have a small pantry. The key is finding the perfect balance between depth and functionality—shallow enough to keep items within reach, but deep enough to store essentials. Narrow shelves might be controversial, l but for me it was the most practical pantry organization tip. So before you run to Home Depot to get pine boards, figure out your plan for the new pantry! Open shelving or cabinets, floating shelves or brackets?

Under Cabinet Lighting to Brighten Things Up

Small pantry spaces can feel dark and cramped, so adding under-cabinet or motion-sensor LED lights makes a huge difference. It not only elevates the look but also helps you actually see what’s in your pantry—because no one likes hunting for peanut butter in the shadows. Elisha from Our Aesthetic Abode added these rechargeable lights to her DIY walk-in pantry build and it’s SO cute! If your pantry has a door, motion-sensor lighting is a fantastic way to ensure it turns on automatically when you step inside, making late-night snack runs much easier.

Wallpaper for a Fun Pop

A little pattern can go a long way! Wallpaper is the perfect way to bring in some personality to your pantry space, especially if you want a bright and airy butler’s pantry vibe. If you’re not ready to commit, peel-and-stick wallpaper is an easy way to experiment. My friend Sam from One Smith Story made a dreamy kitchen pantry with this blue botanical wallpaper. It’s not a huge additional cost because the wallpaper just goes on the back of the cabinet or shelves but adds a ton of style points.

Custom Cabinetry to Fit Awkward Spaces

If you’ve got an odd corner or an unused storage area, a custom pantry cabinet is the perfect solution. Whether it’s lower cabinets for extra storage or upper cabinets to hide small appliances, tailoring the space to your specific needs is key. Think about adding pull-out drawers or adjustable shelving for even more flexibility.

Custom Shelving for Small Appliances

I love this idea because small appliances tend to clutter up valuable counter space. A dedicated spot for your coffee machine, blender, or even an air fyer keeps everything organized and within reach. I love how the DIY Mommy has a spot for everything from small items to larger appliances.

A Dedicated Step Ladder or Step Stool

Pantry Step Ladder

I can’t be the only one who has precariously balanced on a chair to grab something from the top shelf. A little step stool tucked into the pantry makes accessing upper shelves so much easier. I’ve always had a step stool in my pantry because I’m short and always need a little extra boost 😀  Bonus points: a foldable step stool is a great space-saving option, or you can get a stylish wooden one that blends seamlessly with your decor.

Swap Out Your Pantry Doors!

One thing I know I’m doing is swapping out my old pantry door for an antique door. I’ve found the perfect one from Saltaire Antiques in Houston and it just needs a good old sanding and some love to bring it back to life. Ryia also found these gorgeous doors from the same antiques warehouse and they completely revamped the feel of her kitchen.

Butcher Block Countertop

If your pantry has space, adding a butcher block countertop creates the perfect place for food prep, setting down groceries, or even a little coffee station. It’s a great way to make a small pantry feel like a built-in pantry. Plus, the warmth of butcher block brings a cozy, inviting feel to the space.

Block Printed Cafe Curtain

This one is personal because I love block printed fabric and have to have cafe curtains in my pantry! They add so much charm while also hiding the not-so-pretty pantry essentials. Ryia, my friend from Kin and Kasa has the best designs and I love her lilac pantry with block printed curtains! The corbels are something I definitely want to add to mine as well to give it that old world charm.

Beadboard and Trim Work for Interest

Texture, texture, texture! Beadboard, tongue-and-groove paneling, or even simple trim work can transform a basic pantry into a dreamy space. It’s an easy way to add old-world charm, and it works beautifully in cottage-style pantries. I’m planning on adding some kind of vertical paneling to my pantry as well!

DIY Peg Rail

A peg rail is a practical and stylish way to store aprons, cutting boards, and kitchen towels while keeping them easily accessible. I love how this pantry is styled, it’s so cottage inspired and the color is soo pretty!

Wooden Bins on Castors

Heavy-duty wooden bins with wheels? Genius. They’re perfect for storing onions, potatoes, or even kids’ snack bins that you can roll out when needed. Add castors to existing bins so you can pop them under the bottom shelf.

Love the look of a butler’s pantry? A brass rail for hanging pots and kitchen tools adds a sophisticated touch and frees up cabinet space. I recently added one above my range and it’s totally transformed the look of my kitchen!

A mini coffee bar inside a pantry? Yes, please. Narrow open shelves keep mugs, coffee beans, and syrups within easy reach while saving counter space in the main kitchen.

Custom On-the-Wall Spice Rack

Spices can easily get lost in deep shelves, so a custom on-the-wall spice rack is a game changer for organization. Plus, it looks so aesthetic. Clearly I’m in love with everything Elisha does! This is her new walk in pantry which is a much larger space but it’s full of ideas to steal!

Painted Glass Doors

If you want to add character, consider glass doors! Whether clear, frosted, or painted, they add a decorative touch while forcing you to keep things visually organized. I also love the color palette in this pantry, it’s so charming with the green and yellow and the touch of pattern with the fabric!
