Measure and mark your plywood, then apply painter’s tape along your cut lines. This helps avoid splintering. Use a circular saw with a guide to cut a 28" x 48" panel.
From the leftover plywood, cut four 17" pieces. These will be laminated together into two thick, modern legs.
Apply a generous amount of wood glue between two leg pieces, clamp them tightly, and let them dry overnight. Repeat for the second leg.
Use your random orbital sander to smooth the faces and edges. Pay special attention to the sides—they’ll be seen the most.
If you’re using iron-on banding, heat your iron and slowly press the banding onto the exposed edges. For contact cement, follow the instructions on the can. Trim off the excess with a banding trimmer.
Flip your table top over. Measure 10" in from each short end and mark the leg positions with painter’s tape.
Apply wood glue to the top edge of each leg and press into place. Reinforce with L-brackets and wood screws. If you prefer added strength, you can also use a Kreg jig for pocket holes.
Let the entire structure sit overnight. Give the glue and brackets a long time to bond properly.
If you used pre-finished plywood, you’re done. If not, apply wood conditioner and follow with a coat of gel stain. This adds depth and richness to your modern coffee table.
